Retired Major General Forrest Tignor has served his country and his family with distinction

There is no greater collection of college football fans than those who turn up for the annual Army-Navy game. By and large, they are men and women of distinction, who have chosen a life of service to their country.

They also know how to have a good time.

As I wandered around the tailgate lots surrounding Northwest Stadium (it’s still FedEx Field to me), there was no lack of competition for tailgating supremacy. I could smell the aroma of chili and grilled meats wafting through the air, backed by the thumping of music from PA speakers and the cracking of ice cold beers.

But in the end, the final Tailgater of the Week award for the 2024 season goes to retired Major General Forrest Tignor, the eldest of 3 generations of Tignor men I had the privilege of tailgating with prior to Army-Navy. A graduate of Virginia Tech‘s Corps of Cadets, Maj. Gen. Tignor’s years of selfless service to his country are an inspiration to his family, who reflect his values of duty and honor in their own lives.

I’ve known Maj. Gen. Tignor’s grandson for many years, and after finally getting to meet the infamous “Gramps,” I understand where my friend gets his sense of honor and integrity.

I also want to give a special shoutout to the Travis Manion Foundation, which hosted the tailgate where I hung out with the Tignor fam, as well as distinguished guests Jack Carr and Jocko Willink. I encourage you to check out TMF’s website to learn more about how they empower veterans and families of fallen soldiers in order to strengthen local communities.
